***Communication consists of exchanging messages between
people: expressing needs; sharing thoughts, ideas and feelings. We all
know that communication involves the use of language (either written on
spoken). Children with autism spectrum disorders usually have
difficulty in discovering the power and pleasure of social
communication and are often slower to develop language. Some children
may have learning difficulties that interfere with understanding
language.
Temple Grandin (an American
animal scientist who has autism) describes how she thinks in pictures
and how words are like a second language for her (Grandin, 1995).
Visual thinkers can be helped by visual support. The TEACCH approach
encourages the use of visual structure to reduce stress and promote
learning for people with autism by making their environment more easily
understood. Since people with autism sometimes tend to also be visual learners, visual aids can help them to make sense of
the world and of other people, including the process of communication.***
Look at this Picture Prompting Communication Booklet that I've made for your child to use to aid in communication, speech and language development.
I started making these booklets for our son because he sometimes has difficulty
remembering what words to say when he wants to ask us for something. He
quickly grabs his booklet, flips through the pages until he sees what
he's looking for. He is then able to tell us what he wants. It's as
though he has trouble simply recalling the words for particular objects or
activities. These 'picture prompting' books have been a life-saver for our son!
Booklet Measurements: 7 1/4" high x 5 1/4" wide x 3/4" thick.
Pictures are approximately 1" square. There are 21 pages in all.
The book weighs approximately 6 ounces.
Each page is preserved and protected with a crystal clear, glossy, Scotch 3M (5 mil) thermal lamination pouch.
There are no sharp edges.
So
that I can personalize your child's communication booklet, please be
sure to include your child's name (as you want it to appear on the main
page). Also include your contact information (as you want it to appear
on the main page). If you'd prefer that I leave those spaces empty, you
can choose to enter the information using a fine point, Sharpie. Either
way, just let me know.
If
you'd like to make your own book and would prefer that I simply send
you the file for you to print out and assemble, you can send a payment
of $10.00 to my paypal account via my email address:
danni.bloom@gmail.com
I can send the file as a Microsoft Word document or as a .pdf attachment.
